About

As in other countries, general surgeons treat people with musculoskeletal disorders. In the middle of the 20th century, due to the increasing number of patients with these diseases, specialists in this area became necessary. On November 27, 1947, a group of surgeons - most of whom had been trained in this type of illness abroad - gathered for a lunch offered by Dr. André Richard, held at the Hotel Atlântico no Monte Estoril, and decided to create an Organizing Committee to prepare the Statutes of the future Portuguese Society of Orthopedics.

In December of the same year, a draft statutes signed by Drs. Abel da Cunha, António de Meneses, Arnaldo Rodo, Artur Azevedo Rua, Carlos Eugénio da Silva Ramos and Cipriano Mendes Dórdio were presented. The final version was ready on June 12, 1949 and was signed by Drs. Arnaldo Rodo, António de Meneses and Azevedo Rua.
