Belgian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology BSOT BAOT BVOT

On Saturday, January 25th, 1964 Louis Rombouts writing to a number of colleagues that thirty orthopedists last week the Flemish Association of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (VVOT) founded.

This can only have been on Saturday, January 18th, 1964, for colleague Karel Boute was unable to attend because his Saturday-afternoon consultation.

This date is also consistent with the belief of many that it was somewhere near the first doctor strike from (1-18 April 1964). Were certainly present: Norbert Cafmeyer, E. Brabandere, Oscar Declercq, Alfons Geussens, Joseph Hosten, Karel Vandeputte, Rik Moereels, Joseph Mulier, Paul Rombaut, Louis Rombouts, Hugo Thibaut, French Vandeputte, WAGG Van de Kerckhove, Ignaas Vanden Berghe , French and Paul Vanderstichele, Dirk Verellen, Pieter Vertongen, Patrick Waterblee. Prof. Joseph Mulier became the first president and would remain until 1980.

A first scientific meeting took place in the UZ Pellenberg in March 1964: Prof. Ghyselen spoke about the treatment of beendertuberculose. For now it still was a de facto association.

The statutes mentioned were only published on October 21, 1971 in the Official Gazette under number 7092 on pages 3572-3574. At the same time the association was a non-profit organization and renamed Belgian Society for Orthopaedics and Traumatology.

Official founders were then:. Charles Boute, Alfons Geussens, Joseph Hosten, Raf Jansseune, Joseph Mulier, Louis Rombouts, Hugo Thibaut, Ignace Vanden Berghe and Louis Vanfleteren Since then it has gone ever crescendo. However, we still read just how this foundation fits into a broader context, according to Dr. Hector Kinzinger (†), from Bruges: 1921 Foundation of the Societe Belge de Chirurgie ORTHOPEDIQUE Albin LAMBOTTE.

From 1921 publications in the Archives Franco-Belges Surgery.

In 1929 appears the first Belgian magazine for Orthopedics memoirs Bulletins et de la Société Belge d'Orthopédie. In 1936 the name changed to Bulletin de la Société Belge d'Orthopédie et de Chirurgie de l'appareil moteur. After the war, the name changed again:

January 1946 Startup Acta Orthopaedica Belgica, together with other Belgian medical journals in the group Acta Medica Belgica with administrative center the ASSMB (Association des Sociétés Scientifiques Médicales Belges) in Brussels. Saturday, January 18th, 1964 under the impetus of Professor Joseph MULIER come Flemish Orthopaedic Surgeons together to Lokeren and establish the Flemish Association for Orthopaedics and Traumatology. March 1964 The first scientific meeting of the new association to Pellenberg with speaker Professor Gyselen: Treating beendertuberculose. Growing activity during the following years.

The name also changes. It is from 1971: Belgian Society for Orthopaedics and Traumatology. Later develop gradually nine subgroups, such as the Belgian Hip Society.

1983 In 1983 organizes the BVOT its first autonomous International Congress in Ghent, which will be from a biennial tradition.

This alternation with our French colleagues, on the basis of the unincorporated association Orthopaedica Belgica, a gentlemens agreement, which is later stored in the Annual Report and List from 1985-1986. 1985-1986 BVOT and SORBCOT establish the association Orthopaedica Belgica, an umbrella structure whose management board, the Bureau is composed of the board members of BVOT and SORBCOT. Orthopaedica Belgica organizes an annual international conference and a herfstcursus. November 26th, 1988 First national written exam for assistants fourth year, was organized by the Education Committee.

The unincorporated association is a body of Orthopaedica Belgica and the Professional Association of Orthopedics (VBS). Later this exam will be extended to the assistants, third and fifth years.

On 27-4-1991, the first oral exam for assistants sixth year in the Ministry of Health.

There is also an oral exam for assistants second year was organized by the Flemish universities.

The Presidium Orthopaedica Belgica changed on January 18, 1996 called Education Committee in Collegium Orthopaedicum et Traumatologicum.

In that year the exam for assistants is 3rd, 4th and 5th year for the first time organized in collaboration with and concurrent with our Dutch colleagues.

This collaboration will last until 2006. 1990 Integration of the associations SORBCOT BVOT and the European Federation EFORT.

1992 Foundation of the association Acta Orthopaedica Belgica whose management joint is detected by the two associations send delegates to the board of directors and to the editorial board. Since then, the BVOT provides the bulk of Belgian contributions to this magazine, which is one of the oldest orthopedic journals in the world, considering it was founded in 1929, albeit under a different name.

The annual BVOT Prize encourages publishing the youth in our national magazine. 1999 organize in June 1999 and BVOT SORBCOT together the EFORT Congress in Brussels. And today At present the BVOT more than 500 members and nine subgroups.

Future Quo vadis, BVOT? Healthy self-criticism should definitely save our plethora of meetings and symposia, to make a plethora which may have something to do with our Flemish desire for sociability, but also deprives us the time to do serious scientific work.

Fortunately subgroups already take quite a few BVOT symposia on their behalf, which restricts excess anyway. There is also gradually to an evolution in the direction of in-depth clinical research.

Science with a large W should indeed become the target of choice BVOT- in this twenty-first century!
