Finnish National Arthroplasty Register - Finnish Arthroplasty Register - FAR
The Finnish Arthroplasty Register (FAR) was founded 1980 by the Finnish Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons to collect information concerning orthopaedic endoprosthetic surgery.
Only the Swedish Knee Arthroplasty Register (1975) and the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register (1979) as national arthroplasty registers are older than FAR.
In 1993 FAR became part of National Agency for Medicines.
A major data contents revision of FAR was performed on 1996.
Results of FAR data were published systematically in Annual Yearbooks 1997, 1998-1999, 2002-2003, 2004, 2006, and 2007.
In November 2009 FAR became a part of National Institute for Health and Welfare. National Institute for Health and Welfare has published descriptive data concerning hip and knee arthroplasty on yearly basis in internet (in Finnish).
In the near future we also aim to publish results on hospital level, with special interest of early revisions, length of stay, and re-admissions. We hope FAR data will help Finnish orthopaedic surgeons to choose right hip and knee implants for right patients.
Currenty, semiendoprostheses of the hip are not recorded in FAR.
As further challenges we aim at including hip fracture surgery to the data contents of FAR.
We also aim at revising data contents of shoulder, elbow, ankle and wrist arthroplasty.
